Picasso & l’art populaire – Retrospective at the MuCEM in Marseille
Picasso, the arts and popular traditions, this is the major exhibition that the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations (MuCEM) will present on a 1200m2 platform in the summer of 2016.
This major retrospective will expose how Picasso, secured in his time and attached to his roots, nurtured his prime influences from the arts and popular traditions.
The exhibition will mirror the artist’s masterpieces, some still unpublished, with reference objects from the vast collections of the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations.
This project underlines the importance of certain recurring motifs in Picasso, particularly inspired by the circus, bullfighting, or music.
A large part of the exhibition will showcase how Picasso developed his craftsmanship savoir-faire, especially work on ceramics, metal or wood, to fit into the artistic language of the second half of the 20th Century.
