Menton, Where you’ll keep coming back… 06500 menton fr

Nestling below an amphitheatre of mountains, nature is preserved; everything here is gentle, calm and beautiful.  In this enclosed space that opens out onto the Mediterranean, influenced by Liguria and Monaco, lies a stretch of land where Western and Eastern cultures meet. More than anywhere else, this is where the Mediterranean identity and lifestyle are cultivated and where past and present live side by side in perfect harmony.

This picture postcard scenery with its unparalleled peace and quiet instills a unique sense of ease, encouraging encounters, conviviality and well-being. You’ll be moved by this perfect balance of all the elements. Better still, you’ll want to keep coming back, because this is where it all begins...

Although famous for its gardens and citrus fruit, Menton is also a wonderful showcase for the architecture that shaped this secret Riviera, but that isn’t all. Already by the end of the 19th century, landscape painters, aristocrats, artists and writers had arrived from all over the world, captivated by the extraordinary light, enthralled by the beauty of the place and attracted by its health-restoring climate and they have bequeathed to us the very special atmosphere that you can still sense today each time you turn down a boulevard or up one of the narrow lanes overlooking the Mediterranean. It is here that some writers produced their very best work. The New Zealand author Katherine Mansfield is a good example; she came to the lemon capital and under the shade of its olive trees she wrote her greatest best sellers that include “The man without a temperament”, “The daughters of the late colonel”, “The stranger”and “Miss Brill”.  In this “City of Art and History” that nature treats so kindly whatever the season, the mountains and magnificent sea are one. This is indeed where it all begins…
